Behaviour Based Safety

Despite strong systems and procedures, many workplace incidents still result from unsafe human behaviour rather than technical failures. Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) addresses this gap by focusing on how people actually work and why unsafe choices occur. It is a proactive approach that strengthens safety culture, improves accountability, and reduces incidents by influencing everyday shop-floor behaviour. BBS helps organizations move beyond rule-based safety toward a people-driven culture where safe behaviour becomes a habit.
The effectiveness of BBS depends on the competence and credibility of BBS Observers. Without proper training, observations may be seen as fault-finding, reducing trust and participation. Structured Observer training enables employees to identify critical behaviours, provide immediate non-punitive feedback, and reinforce safe practices. Trained observers also ensure reliable data collection, helping management recognize behavioural trends and implement preventive actions.

Benefits to the Participants

Participants gain a clear understanding of how human behaviour influences safety performance and accident causation. The training equips them with practical tools such as safety observations, behaviour analysis models (ABC, DOTS), and root cause identification techniques to recognise and correct unsafe acts in real time. Through case studies and interactive discussions, participants develop the confidence to intervene positively, communicate effectively, and contribute actively to safer work practices.
